Roasted goose at Yung Kee (Hong Kong)

We went to Yung Kee for our late lunch, expecting to try a famous roasted goose here. Unfortunately, the roasted goose will not be served until 5 p.m. That is what we were told by the waitress at Yong Kee, who make us feel like this dish is somewhat extraordinary special even though we saw a lot of roasted goose hanging at the front of the restaurant's window.

Anyway, since we are not going to come here again for our second meal during this trip so we decided we will eat something else while we are waiting for the roasted goose. The restaurant was not crowded since the time we arrived was not exact dinner time.

I had just noticed that the restaurant does not offer preserved eggs with pickle as a complimentary dish for guests anymore. May be they only do that during dinner time? Finally, we decided to order some dim sum dishes and stir fried vegetable since we have to sit here until the roasted goose is ready.

This dish is "shrimp dumpling with bamboo shoot". There are 4 of them in a basket. The dumpling skin is very thin and clear which is the style that I like.

We prefer to eat the dumpling with a little bit of chilli oil and red rice vinegar (Gid-Jab in Cantonese?).

You can taste a whole shrimp inside the dumpling. The ingredient is fresh and has a nice aroma.

This is "Fried tofu skin roll with shrimp". The outside skin is crispy and not too oily...same as fried spring roll.

The fillings of the spring roll taste really good. I prefer eating spring roll with mustard and chilli oil rather than sweet plum sauce.

This dish is called "Stir fried snow pea tips with garlic sauce". I don't know why the snow pea tips in Hong Kong taste better than what we had at many chinese restaurants in Thailand.

Here comes a famous roasted goose. Is it good as we expected? If you like meat with a lot of fat, you may probably like this dish. Yes, the skin is crispy as a good roasted goose should be. IMHO, the fat is a bit too much for my liking. I've heard that there are other places in Hong Kong where you can get better roasted goose at a cheaper price. Yung Kee's roasted goose costs twice the price you pay at other restaurants in Hong Kong.

We have to order another dish of stir fried vegetables to eat with the goose. This dish is very well prepared. A stir fried baby bok choy with salted fish tastes excellent. The chef only uses small amount of salted fish. Therefore, the taste of vegetables are not overpower by salted fish. This is by far our favourite dish at this restaurant.
