Tonkatsu at Saboten Shinjuku (Central World)

Saboten is another popular tonkatsu place in Thailand in addition to Katsu King, Katsuichi, and Bekku. But what makes Saboten more interesting than others? It is a tonkatsu chain from Japan, which firstly opened since 1966 in Shinjuku district of Tokyo. Therefore, this would definitely guarantee the high quality of ingredients used at this restaurant.

There are two different kinds of salad dressing sat upon the dining table: Shoyu and Sesame Dressings. We tried both of them but our favourite pick would be Sesame Dressing since shoyu dressing with a hint of yuzu might be a little bit too sour for us. The first thing that was brought to our table is a big bowl of thinly julienned cabbage. Like many premium tonkatsu places, you can get free refills of the cabbage as well as rice, soup, and hot green tea.

This is a side dish for our tonkatsu set...slices of pickled cucumber. Surprisingly, the cucumber tastes better than its appearance.

A hot green tea here doesn't give a nice aroma and a strong flavor as a good hot green tea should be. It is too ordinary comparing to a hot green tea served at Ootoya or Katsuichi.

Firstly, we need to grind the sesame seeds ourselves. This will give a fresh nutty aroma of the sesame seeds. A freshly ground sesame seeds will help enhance the flavor of tonkatsu sauce. Two kinds of sesame seeds were served at Saboten which make this place different than other tonkatsu places I had tried before.

The tonkatsu sauce is light and the taste is not too tangy. If you like a thick sauce, you may not like this one. Since I order the tenderloin tonkatsu set that comes with grated daikon, I don't really need to dip my tenderloin in a tonkatsu sauce.

A tenderloin tonkatsu set, topped with grated daikon and chopped green onions, costs 320 THB. This set will have a ponzu sauce comes with it.

A grated daikon and ponzu sauce goes very well with the tenderloin and make the meat less oily. The pork is tender while the bread crumbs are so puffy and crispy, which gives a perfect combination.

This is a set of tenderloin tonkatsu (half order) and two fried prawns, costs 290 THB. This set comes with a tartar sauce for the fried prawns. This is my mom's set so I didn't get to try the prawn but they look nice. I didn't hear my mom's complaint about this dish so it should be another fine dish.

There are nothing special to mention about rice and soup here. Anyway, it doesn't mean they are not good. But if I have to compare Saboten with Katsukura, I probably will give a higher score for rice and soup at Katsukura.

Finally, a complimentary dessert to finish our meal. A green tea ice cream is so creamy and not too sweet. It has a bitter taste of green tea flavor. I wish that they give us a bigger scoop of ice cream.
